Practical exercise: Film PR & film festival curation – a look behind the scenes

The block event/practical exercise offers students the opportunity to deal with the work in the field of film PR and film festival curation both practically and theoretically.

In the first part, press work before and after a theatrical release will be discussed using the example of a recently released film (documentary or art house feature film). The film will be viewed and discussed together in the classroom. Subsequently, different forms and formats of reporting and media will be analysed – from film criticism in the daily newspapers, on television and on the radio to interviews with actors and directors and the reception in specialist magazines.

The second part of the block event will focus on the topic of film curation. A short introduction to film festivals and festival organization as well as to the practice of film programming will be provided with a focus on the genre of short film. Viewing as a central part of the preparation of a film festival will be experienced in a very practical way: Selected short films will be viewed and discussed together with regard to the preparatory and curatorial measures in the case of an international short film festival to take place in 2021.

 
Praxisübung: Filmpresse & Filmfestival-Kuration – Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen

Die Blockveranstaltung / Praxisübung bietet Studierenden die Möglichkeit, sich praktisch und theoretisch mit der Arbeit im Bereich Film-PR und Filmfestival-Kuration auseinanderzusetzen.
 
Im ersten Teil wird die Pressearbeit vor und nach dem Kinostart am Beispiel von einem aktuellen Film (tba – Dokumentarfilm oder Arthouse Spielfilm) thematisiert. Der Film wird gemeinsam gesichtet und diskutiert. Im Anschluss werden verschiedene Formen und Formate der Berichterstattung über diese Filme analysiert – von der Filmkritik in der Tageszeitung, im Fernsehen und im Radio über Interviews mit Schauspieler/innen und Regisseur/innen bis zur Rezeption in Fachzeitschriften.
 
Im zweiten Teil der Blockveranstaltung wird das Thema Filmkuration im Mittelpunkt stehen. Eine kurze Einleitung über Filmfestivals und Festivalorganisation sowie über die Praxis der Film-Programmierung wird vorgesehen, mit Schwerpunkt auf dem Genre des Kurzfilms. Die Sichtung als zentraler Bestandteil der Vorbereitung eines Filmfestivals wird ganz praktisch erfahren: Ausgewählte Kurzfilme werden gemeinsam gesichtet und diskutiert im Hinblick auf die vorbereitende und kuratorische Maßnahmen eines internationalen Kurzfilmfestivals in 2020.
